Foundation North invests in future of Pūkorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre

The Pūkorokoro Miranda Naturalists Trust have received a funding boost of $180,000 in Foundation North’s latest grants round.

The grant will enable the Trust to acquire the Robert Findlay Wildlife Reserve. This is the most important high tide roost for shorebirds on the Firth of Thames, and where the bird hides are located.

The reserve will also secure public access to this internationally important habitat for shorebirds, including migratory wading species such as Bar-tailed Godwit, Red Knot and Wrybill.

“The principal aims of the Trust include raising awareness of coastal ecology, encouraging research, and advocacy for shorebirds and their habitats,” Trust Chair Gillian Vaughan says.

“Numbers of Godwit and Knot are dropping each year.  To protect these birds we need to protect their habitat.  We are thrilled to have the support of Foundation North which will ensure our work conserving the local habitat for migratory birds continues.”

Foundation North CEO Jennifer Gill says the Foundation is pleased to be supporting more environmental projects.

“We’re committed to ensuring that the Shorebird Centre is enhanced for the protection of our environment and the species of birdlife that thrive there. We are pleased to put our support towards a place for everyone to enjoy.”
